Avanafil is a PDE5 inhibitor approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction on April 27, 2012 and June 21, 2013. Avanafil’s trade names are Stendra and Spedra, developed by Vivus Corporation.
Avanafil works by inhibiting a specific phosphodiesterase type 5 enzyme, which is found in various body tissues but mainly in the corpus cavernosum and retina. Other similar drugs have sildenafil, which has the advantage that it has a very short duration of action compared to other PDE5 inhibitors. It is quickly absorbed and reaches its maximum concentration within 30-45 minutes. About two-thirds of the participants were able to engage in sexual activity within 15 minutes.
