Abstract

RU-58841 (also known as PSK-3841 or HMR-3841) is a non-steroidal antiandrogen which was previously investigated for use as a topical treatment for acne, androgenetic alopecia, and hirsutism.The compound is similar in structure to RU-58642 but contains a different side-chain. These compounds are similar in chemical structure to nilutamide, which is related to flutamide, bicalutamide, and enzalutamide. RU-58841 can be synthesized either by building the hydantoin moiety or by aryl coupling to 5,5-dimethylhydantoin

RU 58841 is a specific androgen receptor antagonist or anti-androgen used as a topical treatment for acne, androgenetic alopecia and hirsutism. RU 58841 displays high affinity for the hamster prostate and flank organ (F.O.) androgen receptors. In vivo, when topically applied, it exerts a potent dose-dependent regression of F.O. area at a dose as low as 1 microgram/animal while being devoid of antiandrogenic activity on deep accessory sex organs and of any effect on testosterone level up to 100 micrograms/animal. Application

RU58841 is a specific androgen receptor antagonist or a so called anti-androgen. This non steroidal topical androgen antagonist was investigated for therapeutic value in androgenetic alopecia and acne. In studies and clinical trials RU58841 has shown to:

Strongly compete against DHT
Increase cellular replication rate in the matrix cells
Increase cellular proliferation of outer root sheeth cells
Increase hair diameter and hair density
Increase the percentage of hair in the anagen phase
Provide equivalent or better net growth than Finasteride

RU58841 works by binding to the androgen receptor in the hair follicle. Therefore androgens don’t have the chance to bind and start the chain reaction of androgenetic alopecia and begin the so called miniaturization process. It has been demonstrated to interrupt this hair loss message locally so that normal hair growth could continue.

Topical RU58841 has a very short half-life (1 hr) in comparison to the oral ingestion of Finasteride (6 hrs) and Dutasteride (5 weeks!). Moreover, RU58841 does not inhibit DHT production like the latter two products. These facts seem to suggest that there is minimal chance of any serious or permanent side effects, and anecdotal evidence on the forums seems to support that. However, because many people are buying RU58841 from online sometimes unknown and unverified suppliers, there is no guarantee of any kind of safety at all. I am not planning to buy RU58841 online because of safety issues. The product is also quite expensive in comparison to Minoxidil or Finasteride.
