Description

Bupivacaine is used for local anesthesia including infiltration. Bupivacaine is often used for pre-operative epidural injection of total hip arthroplasty and is also commonly used in surgery.
Bupivacaine is chemically and pharmacologically related to aminoacyl local anesthetics. It is a homologue of mebicaine and has a chemical relationship with lidocaine. All three anesthetics contain an amide bond between the aromatic nucleus and the amino group. In this respect, they differ from an anal-type local anesthetic having an ester linkage.

Bupivacaine is indicated for local infiltration, peripheral nerve block, sympathetic block, epidural block, and caudal block. Used in combination with adrenaline to prevent systemic absorption and expansion. Post-ball block is prescribed with 0.75% (highest concentration). It is the most commonly used local anesthetic for epidural anesthesia and postoperative pain management.
