Introduction
Androstane-diones are a pair of isomeric steroids which differ at the 5-position. They are distinguished as 5α-androstane-dione and 5β-androstane-dione. In humans, 5α-androstane-dione is a metabolic precursor of both testos-terone and estrone.

In males, conversion of androstenedione to testosterone requires the enzyme 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase.
In females, androstenedione is released into the blood by theca cells. Conversion of androstenedione to estrogen (e.g., estrone and estradiol) requires the enzyme aromatase. Effects
